Bee Nest Help in London — Advice, Rehoming and Wasps

Bees are vital pollinators, so Pest Control Service Group identifies the species before doing anything. Honeybee swarms are referred to a local beekeeper for rehoming wherever possible, and bumblebee and solitary bee nests are usually left alone with advice. Most calls about 'bees' are actually wasps. Call 020 7101 4957 and we will help.

Signs you have bees

Bees are usually rounder, hairier and duller than wasps; a cloud of bees clustered on a branch is likely a honeybee swarm that will move on within a few days.

  • Honeybees: slim-ish, golden-brown, often in a large swarm cluster.
  • Bumblebees: large, round and fuzzy, nesting in bird boxes, compost or under sheds.
  • Solitary bees (e.g. mining or masonry bees): small holes in lawns or soft mortar, very rarely sting.
  • Wasps: bright yellow and black, smooth, slim waist. If this matches, see our wasp page.

Why bees are a problem

Most bees are docile and rarely sting unless the nest is disturbed; the risk is highest for people with a bee sting allergy.

  • Honeybee swarms can settle in chimneys or wall cavities, which is harder to rehome.
  • Nests near doors or play areas may need moving for people with allergies.
  • Bumblebee colonies die out naturally at the end of summer.

Do you kill bees?

We do not treat honeybees. Honeybee swarms are referred to a local beekeeper for rehoming wherever possible, and bumblebee and solitary bee nests are usually left alone with advice.

Only where there is a genuine risk to people, and only where the nest is not honeybees, will a nest be treated. Wasps are the usual reason people call about 'bees', so if you are unsure, read our wasp nest removal page.

Treatment methods and safety for children and pets

  • Species identification (from a photo or site visit).
  • Referral to a local beekeeper for honeybee swarms.
  • Advice on living alongside bumblebees and solitary bees for a few weeks.
  • Treatment only where there is a genuine risk and the species is not honeybees.

Is it safe for children and pets? Keep a calm distance from the nest and keep children and pets away. Do not block entrances or spray bees.

How to prepare for bees treatment

Good preparation makes treatment work faster. Print this checklist and tick off each step before we arrive.

  1. Take a photo of the insects if you can do so safely.
  2. Note where they are going in and out.
  3. Keep windows closed near the nest.

How long does bees treatment take?

Identification is usually quick. Bumblebee nests die out naturally by late summer. Honeybee swarms often move on within 1–3 days.

Bee Nest Help FAQs

Will you remove a honeybee swarm?

We refer honeybee swarms to a local beekeeper for rehoming wherever possible. We do not treat honeybees.

Should I leave a bumblebee nest alone?

Usually yes. Bumblebees are gentle, and colonies die out naturally at the end of summer.

How can I tell a bee from a wasp?

Bees are rounder, hairier and duller; wasps are smooth, slim-waisted and bright yellow and black.

Are masonry bees damaging my walls?

They use existing soft or damaged mortar. Repointing with sound mortar is the long-term fix.
