Commercial pest control and food hygiene inspections

Last updated: 12 October 2026 · Reviewed by: M. Hanifi, RSPH Level 2 qualified technician

During a food hygiene inspection, environmental health officers check for signs of pests and whether you have effective pest control in place. Evidence of mice, rats, cockroaches or flies can lower your rating or close your premises. A pest control contract with regular visits and written reports shows you're managing the risk.

What do inspectors look for?

Inspectors look for live pests, droppings, damage, entry points and records showing pest control is managed.

  • Droppings and gnawing in stores
  • Insects in preparation areas
  • Proofing gaps around pipes and doors
  • A pest control logbook and reports

What if pests are found?

The officer may lower the rating, issue a notice or, for serious infestations, close the premises until pests are dealt with.

We can respond same-day and provide documentation for re-inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pest control contract a legal requirement?

Not in itself, but food businesses must prevent pests, and a contract is the simplest way to show that.
